With today’s hurried and hectic pace of life, not to mention the dwindling level of social interaction, we face ever-increasing negativity. Many people are not even aware of the amount of negativity that permeates their life. It builds and builds, often subtly and gradually, until we experience the symptoms, such as poor sleep, poor health, or an unsettled mind, and do not know why.
We need to detox our spirit in the same way we detox our internal organs. Our minds and spirits deserve to be healthy and at peace, but we have to take the steps to care for them.
1. Experiencing nature
Nature allows us to reconnect with the bigger picture and has an immediate, positive effect on our psyches. However, we need to disconnect ourselves from artificial items like phones and gadgets to truly experience it. If possible, stop by a park on your way home, or just squeeze in a short daily walk free of any distractions.
2. Your surroundings
The people you surround yourself with effect your state of mind. You have no doubt felt the effects of group laughter. If the people around you are positive and focused on the present, that positivity will pass to you. The opposite is also true of negative people. Seek out those who bring you positive energy, and begin to phase out those who don’t.
3. Helping people in need
It is too easy to become bogged down in trying to keep up with the Jones’, always comparing yourself in accomplishments, station, and possessions. The best way to push negativity like this out of your mind is to take a step back and see the people who are less fortunate than you. Rather than trying to keep up with those ahead of you, look for ways to help those behind you catch up. It will not be long before you are grateful for what you have and begin to see your life through a more positive lens.
4. Meditation
Find time for yourself to meditate, even if it is just a few minutes a day. Meditation is a necessary pause in your exhausting routine to connect with our senses and reflect on positivity.
5. Remember what good you have received
It does us no good to envy what others have. But, looking at your own life and seeing all that you have will make you realize that you almost always have more than you asked for. This positive reflection helps in detoxing our minds by giving us a note of gratitude to end on.
Many things in life are difficult, but everything is temporary. Connect with your spirit in order to remove the toxic energy from your life. Treat your mind and your spirit the way you should treat your body with care, love, and respect.
Get Your Priorities in Order
Let’s be honest, we all have those moments when it feels like everything and everyone is just draining everything we have. This is often a good indicator that you need to take the time to invest in detoxing your mind and body. Personally, I have standing days dedicated to just that. The reality is that I can’t really tell you what I do these days. Mainly because it changes constantly. One thing is consistent though on these detoxing days. I do whatever I need to, to reconnect with the world around me. This list of tips was born from the constants that always help me find myself again. With that said you may find that you personally need something else on top of this list. All I can tell you is to listen to your body.
When You Know You Want To Shout
Don’t wait until your body is screaming at you that something is wrong. The key to great health is to spot the signs early enough to stop a trickle from becoming a roar. One of the best ways to do just that is with a schedule. I am a type-A person, and as such, I do REALLY well with a schedule. Your challenge today is to write out a schedule for one week. During the week you need to schedule a minimum of two days to detox and destress. If you find that you are even more agitated than normally you may want to put in additional venting periods. For example, I add in three spa nights a week to help me unwind along with daily meditation and walks. No matter what your schedule looks like, start by scheduling in your downtime first. Trust me it will help ensure that you are successful in being consistent with it!
