When it comes to your health we all know how important it is to keep your eyes on the prize. It’s not just about having a vision for the life you want, it’s about supporting your whole body’s needs. One of the organs that often gets overlooked more than any others in our eyes! Let’s be honest, at the end of the day, we don’t realize just how important something is or how often we use it until there is something wrong with it.
Unfortunately, when it comes to our eye health in most cases it is not like a light switch that flicks on and off. In most cases, our eye health slowly declines and as such, we fail to notice just how bad things are until they reach dangerous levels. One of the biggest hurdles we face with eye health is blood flow. Blood flow is one of the most important things for our whole body. Nutrients and toxin elimination are essential for supporting health throughout the body.
Keeping Things Flowing
Circulation is everything! Most people don’t realize just how little circulation actually makes it to the eyes. In spite of the fact that the eyeball is fluid encased at all sides and kept safe and lubricated. Our eyes are exposed almost constantly with little to no blood flow connection. The one main point of blood flow stems from the optical root. Unfortunately, the root doesn’t provide enough circulation for the eyes over an extended period of time.
Another downside to this limited connection of circulation the eyes are often one of the first parts of the body to suffer. Hypertension can be disastrous for the entire body. However, the first place it hits, as well as the area that hit the hardest, is the eyes. The excess strain on your blood pressure causes pressure to build up in your eyes as well as your head. Remember, blood flow matters, it not only removes toxins to be eliminated, but it also directs vitamins, minerals, and nutrients where they need to be.
Keep Your Eyes On The Prize
While there are tons of things you can do to help support your eye health. The first thing I would suggest is to make the swap to an anti-inflammatory diet. Doing so helps your whole body and of course your eye health. There are a variety of vitamins and minerals that help support and improve your eye health. The best vitamins to support your eye health are vitamins C, E, B1 (thiamine), and Omega-3 fatty acids. Whereas the minerals that are essential for eye health are zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthum.
While there are a number of ways you can get these vitamins and minerals into your daily routine. My personal favorite way to do just that is through nutrition. The best foods to reach for are fish, nuts, legumes, seeds, citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, eggs, lean beef, and of course water! Don’t underestimate the importance of water. Our bodies are made up of mostly water and it is important to keep the status quo.
Stronger Inside & Out
Another key ingredient to help love your eyes is reducing stress! Stress is at the root of all illnesses. While stress has a way of working its way into every facet of our lives. It can have devastating effects on more than just our bodies. Stress breaks our bodies down slowly. As such, just like our eye health, when something slowly degrades over a long period of time we tend not to notice until it is too late. That’s why it’s imperative to do as much preventative work as possible. It’s important to spot the signs early and do everything you can to support your health.
When it comes to spotting the signs of degrading eye health there are a few things to keep an eye out for blurred vision, eye strain, pressure headaches, dry eyes, itchiness, and more. It’s important to have your doctor check your eyes regularly at least once a year. Your eyes are the lens you use to envision your life and complete daily tasks. They are the windows to more than just your soul. So make sure you treat them right and detox regularly and often.
Kumquat Mojitos
Gluten-Free, Vegan, Serves 10
- 10 ounces of fresh-squeezed Orange Juice
- 1 quart Coconut Lime Water
- 20 Kumquats halved
- 1 cup Mint leaves
- 2 Limes cut into 10 wedges
- 1 ¾ cup Coconut Rum
Directions:
In a large pitcher, combine mint leaves and kumquats. I was using a wooden spoon to muddle the mixture. Pour orange juice, rum, water, and squeeze lime wedges into the pitcher. Add ice and serve chilled.
Mango Mousse
Gluten-Free, Vegan, Serves 8
- 2 large ripe Mangos
- 1 ⅔ cup Coconut Cream chilled
- ⅓ cup Powdered Stevia Monk Fruit Sugar
- ½ tsp Pure Vanilla
- 1 tsp Agar agar powder
- 2-3 Tbsp Coconut Milk warm
Directions:
Chop and puree the mangoes. Add 1 tsp agar agar powder in a bowl with 2-3 Tbsp of warm coconut milk. Stir well until dissolved (about 1-2 minutes). Heat mixture in the microwave for 1 minute and stir well. In a large bowl, add cold cream and whip with a mixer for 2 minutes. Add in vanilla and powdered sugar, whip for another 9-10 minutes or until peaks form. Next, add in the cooled agar mixture and whip for another minute. Gently fold in the mango puree until incorporated. Pour the mixture into your serving dishes and chill for at least 4 hours. Top with coconut whipped cream and fresh fruit of your choice (pistachios are a great choice too).
Lemon Garlic Chicken Orzo Soup
Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Serves 6
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken cubed
- 5 cloves garlic minced
- 1 white onion diced
- 4 carrots diced
- 2 celery ribs diced
- ½ tsp dried thyme
- 5 cups chicken stock
- 3 bay leaves
- 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
- ¾ cup uncooked gluten-free orzo pasta
- 1 lemon juiced and zested
- 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 1 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
- salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
In a large soup pot, heat 1 Tbsp oil over medium heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Add the chicken to the pot and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 2-3 minutes, and set aside. Pour the remaining oil into the pot with carrots, onions, celery, and garlic. Cook for about 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Next, add the thyme and cook for an additional minute or until fragrant.
Whisk in the chicken stock, bay leaves, and one cup of water. Bring soup to a boil and stir in the orzo, rosemary, and chicken. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for about 10-12 minutes until tender. Stir in remaining ingredients, seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Serve while hot.
